How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall? |
Practice, practice, practice - and that
is what millions of people across the
country have done for generations.
Piano lessons led to recitals, with
dreams of glory dancing in their heads
- or at the least their doting parents
and relatives. What happened after all
of those hours of agonizing scale runs
and finger exercises? Did it all go for
naught - to be wasted away in parlor
entertainment with endless renditions
of Heart and Soul? Composer Brenda Hutchinson set out across the U.S. to find out - with a U-Haul truck, a piano and a microphone.
How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall? was produced by Brenda Hutchinson with production assistance from Pay Yoo and made possible by a grant from the meet-the-composer Reader's Digest Commissioning Program in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund. Additional support from the San Francisco Arts Commissions Cultural Equity Grants Program. Special thanks to Harvest Works and to Mills College.
