Nikola Tesla was to become one of the most influential visionaries and inventors of the modern industrial age. Born in 1856 in Croatia, he claimed to have drawn many of his developments from the dreams and visions that he had experienced since childhood. But he was never able to market himself in the way that his rivals Marconi and Edison did, and has largely dropped from the history of science, although he served as the model for the 'mad scientist' of popular entertainment.
